Bladder fistula repair involves the surgical elimination of a pathological connection between the urinary bladder and another organ.

DA-VINCI BLADDER FISTULA REPAIR

Causes

The pathological (unnatural) connections between the bladder and another organ, such as the intestine or vagina, or even externally, can be both congenital and arise after surgeries, from inflammations, or due to tumors.

Symptoms

Depending on the location of the fistula, symptoms can include difficulties during urination, involuntary urine loss, air or stool in the urine, and frequent urinary tract infections.

Special Features

Fistula repair surgeries are quite challenging due to local tissue reactions and or previous surgeries.
Da-Vinci bladder fistula repair is a robot-assisted, minimally invasive keyhole surgery that requires special surgical expertise. Instruments are inserted under general anesthesia through small abdominal incisions and then controlled by the surgeon via a console.

How is the surgery performed?

During the surgery, the fistula tract is removed, the organs are closed, and own tissue such as peritoneum or an internal fat apron is inserted for healing. In bladder-intestine fistulas, a partial intestine removal is performed. The bladder should be drained with a bladder catheter for healing.
The success of the operation depends on the team’s experience and specific patient data.

What risks should be considered?

General surgical risks:

Every surgery carries risks such as bleeding during or after the operation, damage to adjacent organs, or problems with wound healing.

Patient-specific risks:

Previous surgeries, illnesses, or medications can affect the course of the operation and postoperative recovery. These risks are assessed individually based on the patient’s medical history.

Surgery-specific risks:

Possible side effects include new fistula formations or urinary tract infections. In cases of intestinal involvement, intestinal complications such as obstruction, leaks, and delayed activity, which may require further interventions, cannot be ruled out.
After the surgery, which aims at the restoration of the urinary tract, regular follow-up examinations are essential due to the risk of new fistula formation. Moreover, a balanced diet, adequate fluid intake, exercise, and sleep support recovery and strengthen long-term health.
